Project Goal Summary
Our project goals were to increase the native bird population in and near our school, and to decrease the amount of wood waste that gets sent to landfills. The way we decided to achieve these goals was to make birdhouses out of upcycled wood, sourced from a local construction demolition site.  We then built and painted the birdhouses by hand, to be placed on trees around the school. The birdhouses had some bird feed inside them to attract birds, and the birdhouse holes were only large enough to target native species. We are hoping for that the houses give them a safe place to reproduce for the spring, and thus there can be more native birds in the area. Overall, our project was a way of turning a wasteful material into something useful for our environment.

Project Goals and News

The challenge our project seeks to address is twofold: the increase of wood from demolition construction sites being sent into landfills, and the decrease of native bird population in the South Bay area. The way we proposed to tackle both problems was to build birdhouses made out of upcycled wood, sourced from a local demolition construction site. We plan to measure our progress by regularly checking the birdhouses to see if there has been any bird activity inside. During these regular checkups, we will refill our birdhouses with birdfeed to hopefully attract more birds to the houses.

During this project, one thing that has gone well is the sourcing of spare wood for our birdhouse. The wood was waste from a construction demolition project, so it was perfect to be upcycled and used as pieces for a birdhouse. Another successful thing from this project has been the support we have gotten from our teacher. She has helped us throughout the project, helping us be more efficient and preventing us from facing problems.

A challenge during this project has been time management and effective communication between group members. There were times throughout the project when our tasks piled up on each other and it was difficult to get back on track with our progress. To resolve this problem we came up with a plan of creating a to-do list for the week, so we know the parts of the project we need to complete in a reasonable amount of time. We also lacked communication within our team in certain aspects, which caused our project to be slowed down. We learned that communication is the most important part of success.

Groups or individuals involved in our project have included the following: our teacher, Ms.Hamasaki, CTE Specialist, Dr. Dexter, our school’s Plant Manager, Mr.Vazquez, and STEM Program Director Meghan Nealon.  Our materials for the project have been donated, such as wood and birdfeed. Additionally, we used our teacher's paint to make the birdhouses colorful and obtained transportation to and from our bird walk from District resources.

A way we are communicating with the community is by posting informational flyers around the school, which have facts about the birds we plan to attract with the birdhouses and facts and goals about the project itself.
