NWF ECOLEADER SPOTLIGHT

Amira Odeh

Certified NWF EcoLeader

One of the first undergraduates to complete the NWF EcoLeaders Certification project, Amira Odeh served as the president of the Eco-Environmental Society at the University of Puerto Rico launching the "No Mas Botellas" campaign to ban plastic water bottles from her campus. Her work eventually led to developing a proposal to significantly reduce the sale of bottled water at the UPR Rio Piedras. Amira and her group succeeded in banning bottled water sales on campus and getting the university to install new drinking fountains. Amira graduated in 2014, but the education efforts she put in place continue.

What she’s up to now: Using the project-based leadership skills she gained through EcoLeaders, Amira served as Campus Organizing Director with NextGen Climate Action and went on to earn a Master of Science in Hydrology and Water Resources Science while supporting efforts to advance environmental leadership in the region. Amira now serves as a Gulf and Caribbean Regional Organizer for 350.org while also running her own Sustainable Living Coaching business.

Amira on her NWF Experience: I was able to see from the EcoLeaders program how many people out there were doing sustainability projects everywhere. It was really helpful to just see that I’m not by myself; there’s a whole lot of people who care about this. It helped me realize that these aren’t really isolated projects; it’s one big movement working for the betterment of our planet and our future. It helped me realize that in the future, in any occasion or in any project that I’m doing, I can always reach out to other people in the movement, and they probably have great contacts or experiences or advice, and we can help each other.

TAKE ACTION

Speak Out for Wildlife, Land, & Culture in the Caja del Rio

The Caja del Rio, located just outside Santa Fe, New Mexico, embodies the ancient and modern connections between wildlife, lands, and people. Spanning more than 106,00 acres, the Caja is home to a diversity of wildlife species and thousands of ancient petroglyphs that depict how humans have interacted with wildlife since time immemorial. The Caja is a critical piece of the wildlife migration corridor that runs from Colorado to Mexico–one of the most intact wildlife pathways in the nation.

Despite this, the Caja faces numerous threats including wildfire, mining, vandalism, illegal dumping, unregulated shooting, and habitat fragmentation. That’s why a broad coalition of Indigenous, Latino and other community leaders have come together to advocate for permanent protections for this sacred landscape.

Please let Congress and the Biden Administration know that you want to see increased protections for New Mexico's Caja del Rio.
