NWF ECOLEADER SPOTLIGHT
Christina Rinas
2013 NWF Campus Ecology Fellow
Alaska Pacific University
Project: Through her NWF Fellowship, Christina studied vegetation changes in the alpine tundra of the Chugach Mountains in south central Alaska, specifically inventorying, assessing, and documenting shrub expansion into alpine tundra. The results of this study help to inform natural resource managers about changing alpine wildlife habitat. You can the research summaries by clicking on the links below:

What she’s up to now: After finishing her MS in Alaska, Christina worked for the National Park Service for a couple of years. She is currently pursuing her PhD at the University of Sherbrooke in Quebec where she is studying lichens and mosses. For her MS research she studied how woody vegetation is expanding upslope in the mountains of Alaska. Similar changes have also been observed in temperate forests. She is curious to see how these changes relate to the composition of lichens and mosses that grow on trees.
Christina on her Fellowship: My participation as an NWF fellow gave me the opportunity to connect with other people who are also interested in science and sustainability. Also, being a former NWF fellow shows potential employers that I am serious about my work and research.
