NWF ECOLEADER SPOTLIGHT
Ivy Dunlap
Environmental Specialist and Landscape Architect; City of Portland, OR
NWF Fellow
Project: Ivy helped develop a “scorecard” for measuring the sustainability of proposed landscape designs on campus. The university’s current “Campus Plan” continues to value sustainable campus landscaping practices by requiring all development, redevelopment and remodeling on campus to incorporate sustainable design principles.
Ivy’s Career Journey: Ivy earned both her undergraduate and graduate degrees in landscape architecture from the University of Oregon and is a LEED-accredited professional. Ivy is an Environmental Specialist and Landscape Architect for the City of Portland, Bureau of Environmental Services. She is on the Sustainable Stormwater Management Team where they work on a variety of CIP, demonstration and experimental projects that manage stormwater using vegetation; they integrate art, bike and ped safety and other livability goals into their projects. Most of Ivy's work focuses on design and policy for vegetated stormwater management in the public right of way.
Ivy on her NWF experience: The fellowship grant that I received helped me work on my master’s project, which focused on university campus sustainability in the landscape. I was a landscape architecture student, and LEED for buildings was popular, but the landscape was often overlooked. So, it gave me an opportunity to investigate landscape sustainability, and I think that’s always helped me, even in interviews, to talk about my master’s project and that investigation and that interest that I’ve had for so long in sustainability and the landscape. I have continued to pursue landscape sustainability in all of my jobs, and now have my dream job of doing amazing stormwater management project all the time!

TAKE ACTION
Save Grasslands for Monarch Butterflies
Monarch butterflies across the United States have experienced declines of as much as 85 to 99 percent since the 1980’s. For the eastern population, which accounts for the vast majority of all monarchs in the United States, science is showing that a driver of their decline is the loss of breeding grassland habitat in the upper Midwest. Grasslands in our heartland provide some of the largest remaining tracts of breeding habitat for monarchs.
HAPPENINGS
Get Outdoors and Come Clean for Earth!
The National Wildlife Federation and Johnson Outdoors have teamed up to inspire people to get outdoors and take simple conservation action to help clean up our planet.
We’re calling on outdoor lovers everywhere to come together to take the Clean Earth Challenge! Join with friends, family, neighbors, classmates and co-workers in a community effort to help make our planet a healthier, happier place.
Our goal is to collect one million pieces of trash and debris that litter our beautiful land, oceans and waterways. This pollution has a devastating effect on the health of our ecosystems, wildlife and the planet. By taking the Clean Earth Challenge, you can help improve the health of our environment.
