I joined a community garden last year, so this is my second year of gardening, personally. I live in Arlington, Virginia, and my garden plot is just a 15 minute walk from home - it has made it so much easier to incorporate more veggies into my diet and to compost all of my kitchen scraps. I grow a variety of tomatoes, root veggies, greens, and herbs, but I've dedicated about a third of my plot to native plants that are beneficial to pollinators, so I've got a couple species of milkweed and native strawberries, white heath aster, threadleaf coreopsis, blue false indigo, golden alexander, and a few others. I had to pull up the germander and goldenrod because they were a bit too aggressive for a community gardening space.

That is awesome! My husband and I got our Wildlife Habitat certificate from NWF last year (we live in Manassas, VA), we made sure to create/conserve habitat for the native and endemic spp. while providing produce for our nutrition. As part of our NWF project and life mission, we are growing our project/business to provide edible garden services to community!

I've been helping with and sharing a friend's garden plot this summer - many of the typical veggies: tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, melons, herbs, etc. We're also trying corn and okra, which I know tend to be a bit trickier, but so far so good!
I've also done some container gardening on my apartment balcony in DC the past few years and was most successful with peppers, cherry tomatoes, herbs and lettuces.
Always so satisfying to grow your own food! Happy gardening, everyone!

I've been living in Hawthorne, California for my whole life, and I would help my Grandma with a small garden that she had. We've been working on the garden since 2015, planting tomatoes, carrots, and small berries. Every summer I would visit her and I would help by watering the plants and removing weeds. I remember there was a small patch of purple flowers growing in the corner of the garden bed even though we hadn't planted flowers, my grandma kept them though, calling it the “Plaza Morada.”
