Anyone have experience with wildlife camera trapping?
Hi all!

I'm mentoring a young person who is working on a bobcat conservation project in Central Mass. She is hoping to incorporate camera trapping into the project. Does anyone here know of any organizations/people who have experience with this?

Thanks for any leads/insights!

Hi Kamilah,

Camera trapping is really very easy once you get the hang of it.  Does any of your professors up there use these camera's? Our ornithology dept. as well as our environmental departments so we have access to them.  Look at your local community for wildlife photographers they might be able to lead you in the right direction. What about your local zoo, I know its not a perfect choice but they do have equipment for watching the animals round the clock

Hi Kamilah,

I am doing great, as I hope you are.  Was so excited to see the class being offered. Thank you so much for posting something about it, it looks to be great!!

Hi Kamilah,

i actually just finished a small project working with wildlife camera trapping. We did it in a small urban reserve where we actually have a few Bobcats! We used simple infrared cameras that you can get at cabana's or any hunting store. You can find them on Amazon as well. The quality of the pictures is amazing for the price of the cameras. You can do a lot of neat studies using the camera traps such as activity levels and even density. If you have any questions I can provide more information for publications to look at. For now your student might be interested in looking at the paper by Rowcliffe that uses cameras to estimate population density of different organisms. Hope this helps!

This is SUPER helpful! Thank you so much. I'll forward this information as well. If she has any additional questions after checking out out these resources, would you mind if I put the two of you in touch directly?

Thanks again. Have a great weekend!
