Advocacy, Education
4. Did you accomplish the goals you set for this project? Please explain.
Yes, we accomplished the goals we had set with our project, we saw multiple birds entering our birdhouses and beginning to nest inside of them, and laying eggs and increasing the native bird population in the South Bay area. We also influenced people on our campus and the Lawndale neighborhood to create their own upcycled birdhouses which also contributed to the decrease of scrap wood from construction demolition sites being sent into landfills.
5. Choose your impact measure type.
Pounds of recycling increased
What were the measurable outcomes of your project?
We are measuring the impact we have from our project with # the eggs that have been laid and hatched, and we are measuring the pounds of wood we have stopped from getting into landfills by averaging the amount of wood used with each birdhouse made.
6. When did you begin and complete your project?
We began our project in December 2024, and we completed our project in March 2025.
7. What was challenging about your project and how did you respond?
A challenge during this project has been time management and effective communication between group members. Me and my group distributed roles and parts of our project amongst each other along with a due date so that we could manage our time efficiently and be on track. We also communicated with each other through messages and daily group meetings to address our problems and questions.
8. Which groups were involved in this project? Students, faculty, staff or community groups?
Groups or individuals involved in our project have included the following: our teacher, Ms.Hamasaki, CTE Specialist, Dr. Dexter, our school’s Plant Manager, Mr.Vazquez, STEM Program Director Meghan Nealon, The LA Audobon Society, and Construction Project Manager, Ruben Nunez.
9. Was your project funded? If so, how?
No, our project was not funded by anyone, our materials like the wood for the birdhouses, paint, and bird food were all donated to us from people involved in the project.
10. How did you communicate about this project and educate the broader campus and/or community?
To communicate with the community about our project we held an in-class presentation to our classmates to show them our goals and how we achieved them. We also created posters and posted them around the school to give students information about the birdhouses and the birds we are trying to attract into the area.
11. How have you evaluated your project?
Group reflection, Individual reflection, Statistical analysis and review
12. What did you do after your reviewed your project?
Celebrated, Stopped the project
13. What was the biggest or best thing you learned from your project?
The biggest thing that I learned from this project is to work on a group project you have to be open to criticism, be open-minded with your teammates, be resilient when challenges come your way, and most importantly have effective communication with your team.
14. What advice would you give to others working on a similar project?
Challenges are always going to come your way, and when they do you cannot back away from them you have to be resilient towards them and come up with a plan to solve the problem in front of you.
15. Based on your response above, what are your future plans for this project? And are there resources (people, financial, etc.) available to sustain it?
My future plans for this project are to influence people outside of the Lawndale neighborhood to create their own Upcycled Birdhouses. There are plenty of people in the area who are creative and would love to see more birds in their community and help sustain our ECA Upcycled Birdhouses Project.
